Other Classes

The Landscape in Pastels - Mastering the Elements of the Landscape
with Bob Palmerton
Wednesdays, 7p-9p
March 8 - 29th, 2017

The class will focus on key elements of the landscape and how best to capture the vibrant color and lighting effects of pastel. Students will create key landscape element studies including sky, water and reflections, rocks and mountains, and fields, using reference photos provided by the instructor.

Pastel painting techniques covered in the workshop will include preparing a base under-painting, enhancing color depth through multiple hues of similar value, and various pastel stroke methods. We will also emphasize creating atmospheric impacts (local vs. distant color, haze, fog), including the creation of depth and distance with layering and lighting effects.

The student will complete at least one painting during the four-week session of approximately 12x16 in size, in addition to the key landscape element studies. Students are expected to have a basic ability to create a landscape painting (i.e., experience with other mediums such as pencil, watercolor, oil or acrylics is preferred).  Participants may choose any subject to paint and should bring appropriate reference materials such as photographs for their 12x16 painting.  Students are expected to bring their set of pastels, sanded paper and a foam core board for mounting the paper.

Non-member cost: $100
Senior or Member cost: $95
Senior member cost: $90
