Pastel Class

Enhanced Landscapes in Pastel
Instructor: Robert Palmerton
Wednesdays,  7-9 pm
October 11 – November 15 (no class November 1)

Bring out the brilliant colors of pastel and develop inspiring lighting and atmospheric effects in this five-week class. Students will learn to create a painting using a five-step, structured approach to build efficiency into the painting process.  The first two classes will be spent using a reference landscape photo provided by the instructor. Students will step through a process to complete a composition, value study, underpainting, color selection, and pastel application including lighting, atmospheric effects, and contrasts of color, value, foreground and distance. Our approach will enable the student to create an enhanced landscape above and beyond the scene depicted in the reference photo.

The remaining three classes will be spent using reference photos provided by the student to continue to apply the time-saving and enhancement techniques learned earlier. Pastel painting skills addressed in the workshop will include preparing a base toned surface in acrylic or watercolor, a secondary underpainting in pastel, enhancing color depth through multiple hues of similar value, embellishing lighting impacts, expressing contrast, and building “sharp” vs. “soft” detail.”

The student will complete 2-4 pastel paintings during the five-week session of approximately 9x12 in size. Students are expected to have a basic ability to create a landscape painting (i.e. experience with other mediums such as pencil, watercolor, oil or acrylics is preferred).  Participants should ideally bring appropriate photo reference materials, a set of soft pastels, acrylic and watercolor paint, sanded paper and a foam core board for mounting the paper.  Sanded paper will be available for purchase at cost.  Reference photos will be available to enhance choices, and general-use (shared) pastels and paints/brushes will be available if needed.

Cost: $125
Members & Seniors: $120
Senior Members: $115
