The Landscape in Pastels
with Bob Palmerton
Wednesdays, 7p-9p, 6 weeks
May 10 - June 21, 2017 (no class 5/7)

Experience the joy of pure color pastels! The Landscape in Pastel workshop will enable the aspiring pastel artist to create unique, contemplative landscape paintings.  We will demonstrate how composition, perspective, color and value development come together to create a successful landscape painting. Emphasis will be on developing atmospheric impacts (local vs. distant color, haze, fog), including the creation of depth and distance with layering and lighting effects.

Students will create key landscape element studies including sky, water and reflections, rocks and mountains, trees and fields, using reference photos provided by the instructor.

Pastel painting techniques covered in the workshop will include preparing a base under-painting, enhancing color depth through multiple hues of similar value, and various pastel stroke methods such as layering, blending, scumbling and cross-hatching.

The student will complete 1-2 pastel paintings during the six-week session of approximately 9x12 size. Students are expected to have a basic ability to create a landscape painting (i.e. experience with other mediums such as pencil, watercolor, oil or acrylics is preferred). Participants may choose any subject to paint and should bring appropriate reference materials such as photographs. Students are expected to bring their set of pastels, sanded paper and a foam core board for mounting the paper.  Sanded paper will be available for purchase at cost.

Non-members: $140
Seniors: $135
Members: $130
